Why do riders 'walk the course' before they compete?
A. Riders walk the course because it is important in their preparation to jump the courses in order and to plan how they are going to approach and clear each jump. Riders also step out on the part of the course between the jumps to measure how many strides their horses needs to take before take-off. Remembering the order of the jumps can be (and is!) very hard so the rider needs to take every step to ensure they know the course as well as they can before their round starts.
