chessBeach

Our Christmas/NewYear's break was terrific... no work, no farm, no horses, no dogs, no cats, no cooking... just family, galleries, museums, restaurants, movies, sightseeing and chess and chocolates on the beach. We had a great time but after 10 days we were glad to get home, unpack our bags, get the washing done and collect our menagerie.

Horse collection didn't go as smoothly as we'd hoped... after the first load I discovered a flat tyre on the float... sod it! Unfortunately, the tyre store had put the nuts on so tightly that we just couldn't shift them. Ron came to the rescue with his fully equipped farm tool shed... an air compressor and a pneumatic drill got the tyre off and the spare on in no time. By the last load I was well and truly over it, and decided to leave Dioso standing in the float, while I had a sit down and socialise. A big THANK YOU to Di and Ron, they looked after the horses, gave us a worry-free holiday, helped load the horses (all good without incident), changed the tyre, helped load up all the horse paraphernalia, provided hospitality, and all with kindness and good humour... what more can you ask for from friends?

Dogs and cat were relatively easy... two cars with two dogs in one (Wolf Hounds can be classified as two dogs by themselves, so I could say three dogs in one car), and a dog and a cat in the other. The Wolf Hound actually climbed out of the enclosure to get to us first... I think she was happy to see us. It seems, according to the 'pet resort' owners, that she changed enclosures throughout the day, if she wanted to visit another group of dogs... they didn't worry about it, just let her visit whenever the urge took her. Peggy, the cat (short for Peg Leg... she only has three legs), hasn't stopped crying and kept asking us to go to bed so that she could snuggle-up

So, all animals back where they should be, children back where they want to be (Canberra and Melbourne), food in the fridge, clean clothes, and we're now ready to start 2012... HOORAY!

I also found a really funny post on NC Horse News Message Board last year. Anyway, the site had a long list of strange horse related laws that do or did exist in various parts of the US.

How about in Omega, New Mexico ~ Every woman must 'be found to be wearing a corset' when riding a horse in public. A physician is required to inspect each female on horseback, and ascertain whether or not the woman is, in fact, complying with the law. I wonder how the physicians went about their inspections? Obviously you could ride a horse in private while corsetless... hmmmm.

Or, how about Hartsville, Illinois where you can be arrested for riding an ugly horse. I wonder what happened to prompt the lawmakers to discriminate against our unbeautiful equine friends or the humans that love them... must have been serious.

If you find these funny, interesting or just bizzare and want more let me know and I'll include some more in each eNewsletter. Also, if you know of any strange laws or ordinance in your area also let us know... we may use them later. My email is This email address is being protected from spambots. Well, I just got back from the gym...my push for a fitter winter break...now I have legs like jelly, arms that don't extend and abs (wherever they're located) that I'm sure are hurting as well. The funny thing is that as I walked out of the gym I thanked 'Chris the Trainer'...WHY!!!! All he does is cause pain and laugh. He should be called 'Chris the Cruel', or 'Culprit Chris'...if you can think of any other name let me know and I'll pass them along...I'm sure he'll laugh some more.

Last week we had gale force winds and freezing temperatures...but it was the winds that caused the biggest problems. The reports were saying that the wind was gusting up to 140 kph and as we huddled inside we felt like the 'three little pigs'...we'll huff and we'll puff and we'll blow your house down.

Last Sunday the numbers were down for our Pony Club Rally Day, with several riders attending the annual Jamboree and many others deciding that they'd give their horses a rest for the winter. Those who did attend were rewarded with a beautiful sunny day and ideal riding weather. Unfortunately, we probably wont get a repeat of these conditions for the next few months, as we move into winter with predictions of several snow events down to 800 metres...we always look forward to being human popsicles...BRRRR!
